When Stress Takes Over: A Science-Backed Solution for Neurodivergent Teens & Adults
How Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) Can Support Mental Health in Neurodiverse Teens and Adults
When you’re living with neurodiversity – ADHD, Autism or other neurodevelopmental conditions – it often means facing challenges that can significantly impact your daily life. Emotional regulation, sensory sensitivities, executive functioning difficulties and social misunderstandings are common struggles for us neurodivergent folks!
Without appropriate support, these challenges can contribute to high levels of stress, anxiety, depression and ultimately a reduced quality of life – especially when navigating work, education or independent living generally.
A 2019 research study published in the Journal of Contextual Behavioural Science examined the benefits of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for autistic adults in a psychiatric outpatient setting. Participants in this ACT-based group intervention experienced reduced psychological distress, improved mood and greater psychological flexibility – an essential skill for managing strong emotions and life’s uncertainties.
ACT is a mindfulness-based behavioural therapy that encourages individuals to accept difficult internal experiences while committing to meaningful, values-based actions. It’s particularly effective for neurodivergent people who may struggle with emotional dysregulation, perfectionism or feeling “stuck” in negative thought patterns. ACT helps people respond more adaptively to life’s challenges, instead of avoiding or suppressing them.
One of the leaders in adapting ACT for neurodivergent populations is psychologist Johan Pahnke from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. He co-developed the NeuroACT program, a structured ACT-based course specifically designed to support autistic and neurodivergent adults. More information about Pahnke’s work and the original NeuroACT model can be found at brainproof.se.
Why Neurodivergent Teens and Adults Need Tailored Mental Health Support
Neurodivergent teens and adults often face unique stressors that can leave them feeling isolated or overwhelmed. Sensory overload, difficulty with transitions, social challenges and persistent self-criticism can all impact mental health. Without targeted strategies to cope with these experiences, many find it difficult to thrive in school, work or relationships.
Programs specifically designed for neurodiverse minds – like NeuroACT – can make a real difference. By improving emotional resilience, reducing avoidance behaviours and increasing self-understanding, ACT-based programs empower participants to build lives aligned with their values and strengths.
