Occupational Therapy Helping Children Director/Senior Clinician - Lisa Hughes Occupational Therapy Helping Children is a paediatric private practice which has been operating on the Northern Beaches for over 20 years.  We have clinics at Balgowlah and Pymble.  Our staff are mature, highly experienced and many have children with whom they have walked the ADHD path.  Occupational Therapy Helping Children specialises in treating children with ADHD, sensory processing disorder, developmental disabilities, and learning difficulties. For children with ADHD, occupational therapy can help them with organisation, physical co-ordination and improving their efficiency in everyday tasks.  The two main areas that we address with children with ADHD are: Self-regulation - teaching a child to identify and adjust their level of alertness; Executive functioning - teaching a child organisational skills, preparing for and making smooth transitions between events, problem solving and time management. At our practice we teach the child how to develop the skills to help them function more effectively and we educate the family about how to create a home environment and routine that is going to support their child’s needs. Occupational Therapy Helping Children offer a practice at Balgowlah and Pymble in addition to working within the school environment.

Our mission is to enable adults diagnosed with ADHD to participate in meaningful life activities, reach their full potential, achieve their goals and improve general well-being. OT 4 ADHDULTS (∴adults) is a private occupational therapy practice.  The clinical practice guidelines for adults with ADHD (Royal College of Psychiatrists, Scotland, 2017) state the input of occupational therapists (OTs) can be particularly useful to help patients structure their time, improve organisational skills, and assist with further education and employment.  Occupational therapy is practical, enabling clients to participate in activities they need, want or are expected to do at home, work or in the community.  OTs are skilled in modifying environments and selecting aids, and adept at breaking down tasks into manageable steps that encourage initiation and increase productivity.  OTs provide holistic care by supporting mental, emotional and physical health: trained to identify individual strengths and address challenges in performing activities.   Occupational therapy rebates are available through Medicare and many private health extras.   OT 4 ADHDULTS provides tailored, collaborative support to clients Australia wide via Telehealth.  Visit www.OT4ADHDULTS.com.au to read more.

The Sydney Irlen Dyslexia Centre assesses children and adults for underlying perceptual issues which contribute to difficulties in the areas of: Reading, Spelling, Concentration, Behaviour, Motivation and Self-Esteem.  An assessment will determine if the perceptual condition, Irlen Syndrome/Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome (SSS), is present. This is a genetic, light sensitivity condition which affects 10-20% of the population and can cause learning difficulties, concentration issues, eyestrain, headaches, migraines, fatigue, frustration and depth perception difficulties.   Should an assessment confirm the condition, Irlen Spectral Filter Lenses are prescribed to eliminate, or reduce significantly, a person’s perceptual difficulties and will allow them to process visual information more effectively.   Appointments can be made by contacting the Sydney Irlen Dyslexia Centre. A referral is not necessary.

Music therapy is an evidence-based practice that involves the intentional use of music to achieve non-musical goals to enhance an individual's everyday life.  Our supports are delivered by music therapists professionally registered with The Australian Music Therapy Association. Our programs are person-centred and tailored to the individual using a blend of known and improvisational (created in the moment) music.  The music therapist uses their musical skills and therapeutic knowledge to develop appropriate interventions to strengthen abilities and achieve non-musical goals that are agreed with participants, families and, where possible, in collaboration with other service providers. We often report positive change for participants who attend our programs in cognitive, behavioural, communication, sensory motor and socio-emotional abilities.  You can read more on our website about how music therapy works and see a little of what it looks like.
