The Cool Kids Anxiety Program has been running at Macquarie University since 1993. It is a structured 10 session program run over a minimum of 10 weeks that teaches children (ages 7-17 years) and their parents how to better manage a child’s anxiety. The program can be run with individuals or in a group, in a clinical or school setting and involves participation of child and parent. For teens the program is nicknamed Chilled. The Cool Kids Anxiety Program is based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), with a focus on teaching practical skills. The program has undergone continual scientific evaluation and development to include the latest understanding of anxiety and its treatment. Current results indicate that most young people who complete our programs show significant improvement. Following treatment, there are marked increases in school attendance, academic achievement, confidence, number of friends and involvement in extra-curricular activities and decreases in worry, shyness, fear and family distress.

KYDS help young people understand, and manage, difficult issues in their lives. We do this by providing easily accessed, personalised counselling and mental health support services, family counselling, and early intervention well being workshops and information events. We ensure issues such as grief, loss, family break ups, friendship problems, school and study stress, addictions, risky behaviour, anger, bullying, anxiety, depression, alcohol and drug use, body image concerns, mental health concerns, self harm and suicidal thoughts do not overwhelm young people. Counselling Services for Young People We provide easily-accessed counselling, provided by approachable, non-judgemental professionals, at centres in Lindfield and Hornsby. We work with young people for the long haul, to help them understand the difficulties they face, and guide them to a position where they can effectively cope with those issues on a daily basis. No formal referrals from doctors or school staff are needed to see a KYDS counsellor: simply ring the main office in Lindfield (02 9416 0900), provide some background information and an overview of the situation, and one of the team will get back to you to arrange an initial appointment. Family Counselling Support Sometimes, the issues young people face impact their wider family, or our...

NOT YOUR AVERAGE MENTAL HEALTH CHARITY Basically, we're a bunch of twenty-somethings looking out for our mates on the beaches. Our initiative was born from a frustration at the lacking visibility and accessibility of mental health care in our area. And from the anger at losing too many friends to mental illness. One Eighty is youth mental health care and awareness done differently. One Eighty is a registered Australian suicide prevention charity. In particular, we use early intervention to promote the prevention of youth suicide. The organisation’s primary activity is to fund, develop and implement local projects that equip young adults with skills in mental health care. These projects engage through educational programs, mentoring support, and life-skills training. One Eighty is primarily led by a team of dedicated and passionate young adults, ensuring the charity’s vision and actions remain evidence based, outcome specific, relevant and accessible to local young people. One Eighty also works to support youth culture, to celebrate creativity and differences, and to encourage community participation on the Northern Beaches. https://www.facebook.com/oneeightyinc/
