2eHub Anne Jackson I have been counselling and advocating for and with the twice-exceptional young person for many years. These are young people who are gifted as defined by Gagne’s model of talent development but who also carry an identified disability. Currently I am completing my Doctor of Cognitive Neurodiversity and have been fortunate enough to specialise in the student who carries giftedness and ADHD in the same body. To engage with these wonderfully complex young people I use a combination of Narrative Therapy and ACT as the gifted student is highly likely to bamboozle a counsellor who uses a more directive modality. Such young people may become engaged in a verbal debate over all the reasons that change cannot happen or that change requires others to do something but not them. The result is that many twice-exceptional students will fail to achieve their potential and or become involved in risky strategies to deal with their distress. My passion is to engage such young people on a journey whereby they can become the author of their life story. Being gifted yet disabled is an oxymoron that doesn’t have to be a disaster.

I have been working with people with ADHD since 2002. I am a qualified teacher with ADHD and have 2 children also diagnosed. My staff and I work one-on-one, as groups do not work well for ADHD. We use a multisensory approach and enhance the use of logic rather than memory. We remediate and test on national benchmarks to be sure of improvement. We assist children to gain mastery over their learning. The flow on is self confidence, social skills, building relationships, insight into their own ability. We create a safe environment for them to learn and a place where they are valued.  Neurofeedback: This has been shown to help ADHD and there is a lot of scientific evidence of its efficacy (See Efficacy of Neurofeedback Treatment in ADHD: the Effects on ... Arns, Martijn et al, Clinical EEG and Neuroscience; Jul 2009; 40, 3; ProQuest Central pg. 180). I have been doing Neurofeedback since 2007 and was further trained by Dr. Ed Hamlin in The States in 2014. The Time Out Centre Inc. has helped hundreds of children over the past twenty years gain a mastery of their ADHD and realise that this is an ability, not a disability! ...

Melinda Gindy - Vice President The Australian Association for the Education of the Gifted and Talented (AAEGT) came into existence in May 1985 as a result of a growing recognition among educators of the need for the establishment of a national body as a focus for the endeavours of Australian teachers and parents in the field of gifted education. The founders of AAEGT were driven by the need for a national forum that provided accurate information, as well as support, advocacy and networks across the nation. AAEGT became an affiliated organisation in 1995 when all Australian state and territory associations for the gifted and talented affiliated with AAEGT. It was agreed that through affiliation the national body could truly represent all states and territories and duplication of effort between what the AAEGT was trying to achieve and what the state and territory associations were providing could be minimised. The work of the AAEGT Council during 1994 and 1995 created this affiliated organisation in support of the gifted and talented in all their diversity. The purpose for which the AAEGT is established is to advance education by promoting and protecting the educational entitlement and well-being of the gifted & talented. The...

At Developmental Paediatrics, we have a team of professionals who are available for assessment and therapy for children and adolescents with developmental, learning, and behaviour concerns. Where there are concerns about ADHD, in most instances we believe an ideal assessment structure is a multi-disciplinary team assessment, so that specialists meet you together and discuss your child as a team before giving you feedback together. For under 6 year olds, we do this either as part of an Early Childhood Multidisciplinary Clinic. This involves an initial appointment with a Developmental Paediatrician and a Speech Pathologist or Psychologist, which will determine the direction of further assessment and therapy from our team of experts.  This can include formal developmental or cognitive assessment tools, autism specific assessments, medical investigations, or assessments in speech pathology, occupational therapy, dietetics, and psychology. For children/adolescents age 6 or above, the Developmental Paediatrics School Age Multidisciplinary Assessment Day has been designed as a comprehensive, collaborative team assessment enabling busy families to have their child or adolescent seen by an expert team in one centre. It is a new and innovative model of complete care designed for 6-17 year old children with developmental, learning, attention, or behavioural concerns, and involves: Development Paediatrician assessment...

I offer screening assessments using standardised and diagnostic tools that are designed to identify students ‘at risk’ of reading and maths failure. Parents receive a short 5-page report detailing the outcome, referrals to allied professionals and brief recommendations for learning support staff at school. I then provide comprehensive educational assessments for students that have completed targeted literacy and/or numeracy intervention either at school or with an allied professional. These assessments formally identify specific learning differences, including dyslexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Parents receive a detailed 25-page report and personalised feedback (via email, phone call or face-to-face) to ensure that they leave ready and empowered to advocate for their child’s learning needs. During my 5 years of specialising in the assessment and identification of learning differences, I have built partnerships with several allied professionals who have the qualifications and skills to help students and their families. Family Advocacy Family Advocacy formally known as ‘The Institute for Family Advocacy and Leadership Development’ is an independent, impartial advocacy organisation that supports families across New South Wales to promote and defend the rights and interests of people with developmental disability. The organisation is managed and staffed by parents and allies of people with disability, who recognise the issues that people with disability and families face and who can assist in strengthening the advocacy and capacity of families. Family Advocacy was founded by families of people with disability, and differ from carer organisations in that our family members are advocating for people with disability to have a good, ordinary life. We do not advocate for parents or siblings themselves, and believe first and foremost in improving the lives of our family members with disability through natural, community supports rather than government funding or services. All of the advocacy work we undertake, including our events, workshops and resources are underpinned by a theory that provides a comprehensive framework for how to help people with disability achieve a good life. The theory is called Social Role Valorisation (SRV) and can be powerful for families to use to improve the life of their family member with disability. We are currently the...
